ABOUT THE NOVEL
In a mining town in the Atacama Desert, Chile, in the early 20th century, Rita meets Xavier and learns that he is a marked man haunted by the sinister Patriotic League, a nationalist organization dedicated to ethnic cleansing. Rita and Xavier’s lives intertwine and deepen while trapped in threats and violence that push them to their limits, all under the indifferent gaze of the authorities. They ultimately find refuge on a primitive farm at the edge of a strange forest on the northern fringes of the desert. Rita and Xavier find freedom in a mystical haven. As they plan a life in hiding in a landscape that transforms before them, they find themselves at the threshold between reality and the unknown. This transformative experience leaves a lasting impact on Rita, a gift she carries throughout her life.
